2016 Rule Adjustments

After the success of the 2015 edition, we’re going ahead with a 2016 festival. We’ve decided to adjust the rules for submission slightly

  • Feature films or shorts that run 25+ minutes are now allowed to have the backing of a TV station or noted film production company on the condition the budget does not exceed $500,000* (USD). All other submissions must be fully independent.
  • Feature films or shorts that run 25+ minutes must not of screened in the province of Ontario prior to the Videodrunk screening. All other submissions are exempt from this.
  • Feature films or shorts that run 25+ minutes must have been released publicly no earlier than 3¬†years prior to the Videodrunk screening. All other submissions are exempt from this.

More details on 2016 to come in the new year.

*exceptions will be made on a case by case basis

It took a few days but we finally have winner reactions to VIDEODRUNK 2015

Best of Fest winner Jason LeRay Keener (director of “Collinsville Trade Day, 1988“) decided to give thanks by giving us “Collinsville”s predecessor for you all to see. Presenting “Huntsville Space Center, 1986

Ted Stenson, director of “Craig, the Loneliest Man in the World, Makes a Friend, Loses a Friend, and Subsequently Learns the Value of Solitude”, addressed his pleasure with his Best Canadian Film win with the following: “Really excited that my short film “Craig, the Loneliest Man in the World, Makes a Friend, Loses a Friend, and Subsequently Learns the Value of Solitude” won Best Canadian Film at Videodrunk in Toronto. Thanks to Matthew Rooney and everyone at Videodrunk, as well as my excellent cast Evan Wilson, Dan D. August Steamboat, Felicia Glatz and Jake McIntyre.

The Audience Choice prize was shared by a pair of films. “I Could Eat a Horse” by Jake Hovell and “Knockers” by Arnaud Mangin.

Hovell: I’d like to say thank you to my lovely girlfriend, family and friends for encouraging me to grind away and get the film cobbled together, so that I could finally move on to another project!

I would like to dedicate the award (or at least my half of the award, as it’s a tie!) to Michael Napier who passed away last week on the 28th of November. He was very generous and enthusiastic about my animations. He kindly let me set up a workshop and stop motion studio in his house, where I shot most of the film. So I owe him a big thank you for making the production possible.

Finally thank you to the audience for voting, it means a lot to me to think that people other than my family might enjoy my work and it makes me hungry to get better and produce more films.

Audience Choice: I Could Eat a Horse (Jake Hovell/England)

Mangin: A few days ago, just a step from the Bataclan, Knockers made strong impression to a Parisian public always determined to have fun.
Two days later, it is inhabitants of Toronto that made the honor for the movie to award it the award of “Audience Choice”.

In spite of the time spent, in spite of the low budget (less than 1000 US dollars), and of evenings to have dinner with my wife with heads made in latex put on the table, the nature of my small movie gets over it: entertain! Nothing to tell, anything to think … Have fun, and just have fun by freeing itself from tragedies, wherever we are.

For years, the American and Anglo-Saxon cinema forged my culture with its sticky monsters and its scream queens… Knockers, it is my way of thanking the new continent.

“Knockers” was also the winner of Friday’s INTERTOTO Prize (director’s pick). Thursday’s was awarded to Eugene Sun Park’s “Self-Deportation: The Untold Tale of a Marginal Woman” (USA)¬† and Saturday’s went to Ali Erfan Farhadi’s “Selfie” (Iran).

2015 Videodrunk in Review

The 2015 edition of VIDEODRUNK has come to a close and we had fun while it lasted. We would like to thank everyone from White House, Modern Superior and Paul’s Boutique for aiding us in our efforts. The 2015 edition was bigger and better than the year prior and every filmmaker should be proud of the fact they helped make it an event to remember. The crowd was lively and excited yet respectful and classy and it showed especially during the QandA with Jonah from our Saturday feature “My Name is Jonah”.

Prizes were of course something that had to be awarded and American filmmaker Jason Keener experimental doc, made of his grandfather Charles’ camcorder footage, “Collinsville Trade Day, 1988” took the festival’s BEST OF FEST prize. Calgary’s Ted Stenson’s “Craig, the Loneliest Man in the World, Makes a Friend, Loses a Friend, and Subsequently Learns the Value of Solitude” was named the festival’s BEST CANADIAN FILM. The AUDIENCE CHOICE was shared by “Knockers” (Arnaud Mangin/France) and “I Could Eat a Horse” (Jake Hovell/UK). In addition “Knockers” won Friday’s INTERTOTO (programmer’s pick) while Thursday’s went to “Self-Deportation: The Untold Tale of a Marginal Woman” (Eugene Park/USA) and Saturday’s to “Selfie” (Ali Erfan Farhadi/Iran).
